The day before the exam, she texted me, sharing that she felt very stressed, sometimes breathless from fear and anxiety about passing. My niece said, "I'm not afraid of failing to get into a specialized school, but I'm afraid of disappointing my parents.".

My sister-in-law invested a considerable amount of money in her daughter's extra tutoring, hoping she would get into a top-tier specialized school in Hanoi. Under pressure from her mother, my niece sought help from her homeroom teacher (her literature teacher), but to no avail.

I lived in anxiety and studied in confusion for many years. And my mother's instructions sometimes made me feel discouraged and depressed, wanting to escape.

My daughter studies and takes exams, but my sister-in-law is the one who's really competitive. Because of that, she studies under immense stress and then crams for exams like a machine, just to do well and achieve her mother's goals.

The child said that whenever she closes her eyes, her mother's words echo loudly in her mind, and in her dreams, she dreams of failing exams and being humiliated by her mother, called a failure, someone who can't amount to anything.

My grandchild, who used to be quick-witted and lively, has become withdrawn. Her blind rage and insults caused my niece to become depressed.

After a period of treatment with a psychologist, my niece gradually regained her balance, but my sister-in-law is still not truly at peace. Her goal of getting her child into a prestigious school has been causing her and her child suffering, yet she refuses to give up.

From my granddaughter's story, I wonder why parents have to torment their children so much because of their studies? Perhaps there are many other children who are also burdened by exams like my granddaughter. So many costly lessons have been revealed, yet it seems still not enough to make parents realize the gravity of the situation.

The fear of failing exams, the fear of parental reprimands, and the fear of adult expectations are causing many children to torment themselves and lose faith in themselves.

Most people still believe in subjective assessments of a child's abilities based on grades and admission to prestigious schools or classes. And so, the sad stories after exams continue to linger.

When will adults give children the right to fail exams, the right to experience and grow through failure, instead of the directives and goals of passing them?

(Source: Tuoi Tre newspaper)

My niece failed the entrance exam and was forced to attend a regular school.
