The first project in this series. “"Creative Green Sprouts"” This belongs to student Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, with her project illustrating a Braille book for the visually impaired about the legend of "Banh Chung and Banh Day" (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes). It's no surprise that Nguyen Thi Thu Hang graduated with honors with this humane project.

Illustrated picture books of Vietnamese fairy tales have always been the first books for many children across different generations. The diversity of illustrated picture books for children aged 3 to 6 is also carefully invested in and published to help children learn about their ancestors' stories through both text and pictures, stimulating their visual development from the moment they begin to familiarize themselves with their senses. However, not every child is fortunate enough to see the light at birth or lose their sight before they can perceive the world.

For that reason, Thu Hang chose the picture book illustration project. “"Banh chung, banh day"”, From the time of King Hung during the nation-building and defense period, with the hope that visually impaired children would also have the opportunity to "touch" and feel the first images through Braille.

With bright colors and images deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture, and a child-friendly drawing style, Hang's product is versatile and can be used by people of all ages. The images of banh chung and banh day in the story symbolize heaven and earth, square and round shapes, representing the creation of nature, and are wrapped in green leaves with a bean filling inside, expressing respect for one's parents.

This is a groundbreaking project with high applicability as our lives become more complete and more opportunities open up for people with disabilities. With a humane and community-oriented perspective, student Nguyen Thi Thu Hang has made a unique choice that reflects the future and holds great potential for further development if she is determined to contribute to society.

During her presentation, Hang shared: "If I had more resources, I hope to create a product that is not only Braille but also Braille artwork so that visually impaired children can experience it more clearly through the tactile sensations on the books." Sometimes, even without sight, nature gives people other, more groundbreaking abilities if those abilities are nurtured and developed over time.
Thank you, Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, for your serious research on your graduation thesis and for completing the project so meticulously. The Design Department hopes you will continue to progress further in the future.
