Admission scores for 'hot' majors have surged dramatically, with some increasing by as much as 8 points.

This year's university admission cutoff scores have increased significantly, mainly in "hot" majors that attract a large number of applicants, while many majors have yet to fill their quotas.

After the virtual filtering process is complete, starting at 5 PM on October 4th, universities will gradually announce the cut-off scores for the 2020 high school graduation exam-based admission method, completing this process by 5 PM on October 5th.

New students of the 2020 cohort participate in the opening ceremony at Viet My College.

Increase by 6-8 points

According to Dr. Tran Hoang Hai, Vice Rector of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, the cut-off scores for all majors at the university have increased dramatically this year. “After the most recent round of virtual filtering this afternoon, October 4th, the expected cut-off scores for the majors are as follows: English Language increased by 6-8 points; Law increased by 5.5-7 points; Business Administration increased by 6-7.5 points. For the 'hot' majors like Law Administration and International Commercial Law, which already had high cut-off scores in previous years, the increase continues this year, with Law Administration increasing by 3-4 points; and International Commercial Law by 3.5-6.5 points,‘ Dr. Hai stated.

Details of the expected cut-off scores for each major: English language (lowest 23.25 points, D01 group); business administration (lowest 23.25 points, A01 group); law administration (lowest 24.5 points, except for A00 group which is 25 points); law (lowest 22.5 points, A01 group), highest 27.25 points (C00 group); international commercial law (26.25 – 26.5 points).

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, after several rounds of filtering out ineligible candidates, the "hot" majors still maintain their rankings with relatively high scores, such as the Artificial Intelligence major, which is expected to have a cutoff score of 27 (the highest score at the university).

The majors with expected cutoff scores of 26 points or higher include: computer engineering technology, information technology, mechatronics, automotive engineering, control and automation engineering, logistics, computer engineering… There are also quite a few majors with a cutoff score of 25 points.

Many majors with low admission scores have yet to fill their enrollment quotas.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khoi, head of the training department at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, said that after five rounds of virtual filtering by the Ministry of Education and Training, the expected cut-off scores for the university are gradually becoming clear: General Medicine above 28.25 points, Dentistry around 28 points, Pharmacy above 26 points (for both A00 and B00 blocks). Meanwhile, all undergraduate programs have also increased by at least 1 point compared to last year's cut-off scores. The university is expected to announce the cut-off scores around noon on October 5th.

According to MSc. Nguyen Hoang Dung, deputy head of the Faculty of Medicine (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), the cut-off scores for the faculty this year have increased by more than 2 points compared to last year. "After 8 rounds of virtual filtering, the expected cut-off scores are 27 points for the medical program, 26.7 points for the dentistry program, and 26 points for the pharmacy program," Mr. Dung shared.

Dr. Bui Hoai Thang – Head of Training Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City) – also stated: “The projected cut-off scores for all majors at the university, as of early this afternoon, have increased by 2 to nearly 3 points compared to last year's cut-off scores.”.

At the University of Science (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City), the cut-off scores for all majors have increased by at least 1 point. The Information Technology group of majors leads with the highest expected scores, exceeding 27 points. Other programs within the Information Technology group are expected to have scores ranging from 24.5 to 26 points.

According to Mr. Phung Quan, Head of the Information and Communication Department of the university, the three most difficult majors to recruit for are geology, geological engineering, and oceanography. “Although these majors haven't yet met their enrollment targets, the university has set a higher cutoff score than the minimum threshold, projected at 17 points (the lowest score at the university). If we set it at the minimum threshold, there wouldn't be any additional applicants, so the university decided on this score,” Mr. Quan shared.

Similarly, Dr. Do Van Dung – Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, also stated: “Although the school's scores increased this year, some majors still failed to recruit students, such as the fashion design major which only had 1 successful candidate. The high-quality Vietnam-Japan electronics and telecommunications major, and the high-quality environmental science major, despite having a cutoff score equal to the minimum of 19.5 points, still failed to recruit students…”.
