Another national high school graduation exam is approaching. After graduating from 12th grade, should students go to university or pursue vocational training and enter the workforce? The answer won't be easy to come by if parents don't base their decision on their children's abilities and passions.

For the parents of the candidates, this exam is perhaps even more important because it is linked to their expectations and plans for their children's future. Every parent worries and wants to plan an educational path for their children so they can have a good job later. And in the context where the admission scores for universities are mostly at the minimum threshold (except for top universities), or even just based on academic transcripts for admission, most parents want their children to go to university after graduating from high school.
Parents' calculations are justified, as many organizations still recruit based on candidates' academic qualifications. However, students' abilities and aspirations vary, so if parents ignore these factors, they may indirectly turn their children into "zombies" in the classroom, or even force them to drop out, be expelled, or graduate with a completely different career path.
Many unfortunate cases arise simply because students lack the perseverance to convince their families and are forced to follow their parents' wishes. Some students with limited academic abilities are forced to attend university because of their parents' desires, leading to them struggling further, failing many subjects, lacking foreign language certificates, and frequently receiving academic warnings. Ultimately, they are unable to graduate despite studying for a much longer period than average students.

Some students attend classes regularly but their minds wander elsewhere, and their final exam papers are filled with disheartened and resentful remarks about life. Some students suddenly drop out in their final year, despite encouragement from teachers and family, simply because they cannot continue studying a major they don't enjoy. Universities have repeatedly warned about this. At the 2018 workshop on the Application and Implementation of Education Model 4.0 in Vietnam, organized by the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), Associate Professor Vu Hai Quan, Vice Director of VNU-HCM, stated that thousands of students drop out annually within the university system for various reasons, including choosing the wrong major. This is also a common situation in many universities nationwide.
The fact that hundreds or thousands of students receive academic warnings, are expelled, or drop out each year is no longer uncommon and has become a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Clearly, this represents a huge waste of both money and time, not only for the students themselves but also for society as a whole. Instead of studying for a few semesters only to be expelled or drop out, it would be better for students to find a job from the start, earning an income while discovering their passions and strengths, avoiding the situation where they drop out midway through their studies due to a lack of interest in their chosen field or insufficient academic ability.
Conversely, there are quite a few students who perform well academically but, after graduation, stubbornly refuse to work in their trained field despite having the opportunity. I know of a student who graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Biology but turned down a job at a flower nursery to work as an employee at a spa center because that was their true passion.

Every parent loves their child and wants to guide them down the path they believe is best based on their own life experiences. At 18, students are not yet mature or wise enough to choose the right path for themselves. However, parents should allow their children to choose their field of study, level of education, or career path that they are capable of and passionate about. Forcing them to attend university against their will risks wasting both their money and time.
