At Viet My University, there are many exciting things for freshmen to discover. One of the most interesting is the Study Skills class, with various topics, each training new students in a completely new skill. This time, let's explore the topic: Teamwork Skills, taught by Ms. Thanh Nga!
Practice "team-building" skills right from the start.
With the goal of helping students build strong, mutually understanding, and effective working teams, they were given hands-on practice from the start by finding like-minded individuals to form their ideal groups. Immediately after forming a group, they were asked to elect a team leader and create a catchy name and slogan. It sounds simple, but working together with people who were strangers to each other was no easy task. Furthermore, electing a team leader when everyone didn't fully understand each other's abilities and strengths caused considerable hesitation. Yet, after much conversation and discussion, five groups with diverse personalities were formed.
The "Building a Tower" game is extremely meaningful.
Like most other classes at Viet My, the Study Skills class also offers students the opportunity to participate in beneficial yet fun activities. In the Study Skills class at Viet My, specifically the Teamwork module, students participate in a classic game called "Building a Tower" using materials provided by the organizers. It's hard to become an "architect" in an instant, isn't it?
After some discussion, the students had a blueprint in their heads and began cutting, pasting, and drawing. Although not everyone was particularly skilled with their hands, thanks to their enthusiastic teamwork, the students put in their best effort to "build" unique "architectural structures" using only newspaper, tape, and bamboo chopsticks.
Of course, a successful architectural project must be able to withstand storms, right? After completing their work within the time limit, the teams had the opportunity to "test the durability" of their opponents' projects by "winding" them. Naturally, 3 out of 5 projects "collapsed," but regardless, the teams were very satisfied with their "results.".
And the lesson learned
After engaging activities in the classroom, Ms. Thanh Nga not only presented delicious snacks to the two winning teams but also continued her lecture with insights gleaned from the students' teamwork experiences. Through these insights, the students understood the reality of "the formation of a group." Specifically, a group comprised of members with diverse personalities and perspectives is prone to conflict. Therefore, we need to understand that conflicts within a group are an "inevitable part" of the process, always occurring. We shouldn't feel anxious or try to avoid conflict!
