When I was teaching at university, some lecturers asked me, "What is PR?"; many students were curious about this subject. During my working life, before I truly researched, explored, and invested significant time in finding the answer to that question, I was also quite vague about it – the person called PR.

If you're preparing for an important meeting with a new business partner, and the meeting is at their office, you arrive early, chat with the receptionist, compliment her neat reception desk, the beautiful flower arrangement, etc., and quickly establish a relationship with her. That's PR – partner relationship – and the result of this "public relations" action is that you'll learn more about the boss you're about to meet, perhaps about their personality, hobbies, or other information you're interested in.
One lunchtime, you invite your team out to eat together, to chat with them, to "update" them on insider information, or to find out who's dating whom – that's PR – internal communications (employee relationship).
We often focus only on actions that yield immediate benefits, but pay little attention to future advantages that would allow us to build, maintain, and cultivate relationships with the "public.".

I've been stood up a few times by young people – some notified me a day in advance, some at the last minute, and some only informed me when they were already late… I think that at that moment, they had other “priority options” for building or maintaining relationships with me. And I wasn't angry, but since then I've been more hesitant when they ask for a second date. It's the same with the public; if you break a promise once, they'll start to doubt you.
Think of public relations like love. It needs attention and nurturing. If neglected, it will quickly wither, just like long-term couples – they start to become indifferent to each other, they no longer feel the need to strengthen their relationship. And from there, they easily lose each other.
