Ms. Nguyen Dieu Anh graduated with a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Environmental Science from Griffith University, Queensland, Australia. In 2011, she was voted "Mentor of the Year" for her dynamism and enthusiasm in supporting students in their studies across various subjects at Griffith.. After six years of studying and working in Australia, Ms. Dieu Anh returned to Vietnam to participate in international projects on environment and agriculture, and worked as a training specialist at several major universities. Currently, she is a lecturer in Business English Translation (BID) at Viet My College.
Why did she choose Viet My College?
APC: After returning from studying in Australia, she was undoubtedly sought after by many companies and businesses. So, what particular impression of Viet My College made her decide to become a lecturer in the PDTATM program there?
Ms. Dieu Anh: Viet My College is the only school where she teaches the major. Business English interpreting. She felt very fortunate to have been entrusted with this job.

When she started teaching, she noticed that the teachers here understood the age group of the students they were teaching quite well. Therefore, the program was designed to be very suitable for students to easily absorb the knowledge. Furthermore, Viet My College is one of the pioneering schools in applying international standard teaching and training methods to vocational education. Although there are still many new things, the management team and lecturers are constantly improving the quality of the training program. Not only her, but many other teachers also studied abroad in various countries before returning to teach at the school.
Furthermore, I was truly surprised by the learning attitude of the Vietnamese-American students. In the past, college graduates were often viewed negatively in terms of their academic level and career opportunities were looked down upon. However, I found the Vietnamese-American students to be very serious and proactive in their studies.

Therefore, the first thing students are taught when they come to Viet My College is to have a serious attitude towards everything they do, from studying to participating in extracurricular activities.
I dislike rigid and purely theoretical teaching methods.
APC: How would you rate the translation course you are teaching in your major's program? Business English interpreting?
Ms. Dieu Anh: The translation and interpreting skills training program for the PDTATM major consists of three levels. She is currently teaching Level 1, the basic level in the field of translation. Overall, she assesses the program as having covered a fairly comprehensive range of knowledge in translation. This helps students gain a holistic view and build a better foundation in their field. Because this is the basic level, theory is heavily emphasized, so conveying the information to students in a way that is relatable, easy to understand, and practical is also one of the challenges for her.
During the teaching process, the teacher is allowed to modify and add to the existing lesson plan. This is a perspective that the teacher highly appreciates about the school, as it demonstrates flexibility and a focus on learning from the experience of professionals. Avoiding rigidity and purely theoretical approaches will help students have the opportunity to apply the theories they have just learned to practical exercises in the most effective way.
From a deep concern for vocational education in the country to the dedication of the lecturer.
APC: Having spent many years studying abroad, what changes and developments do you think Vietnam needs to make in its training programs, practical training, internships, etc., to help students meet the job requirements of businesses upon graduation?
Ms. Dieu Anh: According to her, the national training program generally has three issues that need investment and change:
- Strengthening English language skills development activities tailored to each profession is crucial. In particular, general English communication skills are an essential requirement.
- Strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the school and domestic and international partners (including other schools and businesses).
- Enhance the relevance and practicality of training programs to ensure they meet the needs of businesses.
And indeed, she noticed that Viet My College is focusing on these three criteria in training high-quality vocational human resources to meet the needs of domestic and international businesses and corporations.

In fact, integrated training programs with up to 70% practical sessions per subject and a focus on integration with international education, as seen at Viet My College, are not uncommon in advanced education systems worldwide. However, this is still relatively new in Vietnam. Vietnamese students may initially find this method student-centered, with teachers acting only as guides (unlike traditional teaching methods). However, they gradually show interest and a desire to actively participate in lessons because they find joy, excitement, and encouragement to develop their potential in each subject.
A few words from the teacher to the students of Viet My College.
APC: To help Vietnamese-American students become a high-quality workforce not only domestically but also regionally, what advice would you give them?
Ms. Dieu Anh: First and foremost, you need to further cultivate a positive learning attitude and develop your self-learning and research skills. This will enhance your knowledge and abilities. Next, students need to improve their communication and presentation skills by participating in in-class projects designed within the curriculum. Outside of class, try to dedicate time to useful extracurricular activities. And importantly, don't forget to improve your general and specialized English communication skills by persistently pursuing your passions and dedicating time to honing your skills through various self-study channels.
Finally, she wants to remind you all to always be confident in yourselves but remain humble so that you can maintain a civilized and professional attitude towards your future careers.
APC: Thank you, Ms., for your very practical and helpful insights. We wish you continued joy and enthusiasm in your teaching and success and happiness in your future endeavors.
