Livestream #2 of July: "Flex" Foreign Languages – "Make" the Future

Recently, the second livestream of Viet My College in July aired, featuring Vietnamese and foreign teachers from the Foreign Languages Department. The teachers' talk provided a lot of useful and valuable information for students who have studied or are interested in the Foreign Languages field in general, and the three fields of Business English Interpretation, Korean Language Interpretation, and Business and Economic Japanese Interpretation in particular.

During the teaching and interaction process with students at Viet My College, what observations and assessments do native-speaking instructors have about the students?

Teacher CamEach of you has a different level of proficiency, but overall you are all very dynamic and friendly. And especially, your attitude and spirit towards learning are excellent.

Ms. Choi SungSookFor beginner level students, some may still feel shy during communication. Intermediate level students, however, are more confident in communicating naturally with native teachers because they have a solid grasp of vocabulary and grammar. And when they get hands-on practice, such as through "Try being a tour guide" sessions or live interpreting to introduce products at companies, they gain more confidence and initiative in their learning process.

Ms. Otsubo Wakaba: With their love for Japanese culture and language, and their desire to become a cultural and economic bridge between Vietnam and Japan, the students demonstrated excellent learning attitudes during the classes.

Vocabulary is a very important element in the process of learning a foreign language. The vocabulary is vast, but not everyone has a good vocabulary base. Therefore, could you please share some effective vocabulary learning methods with our students?

Mr. Nghiem (lecturer in Business English Translation): In today's era of Industry 4.0, vocabulary learning has become more diverse and engaging through various websites and apps for learning English. Regardless of the method you use, the most important factor remains a never-give-up attitude and a spirit of learning. To succeed in the field of foreign languages, you must have passion and perseverance!

Ms. Choi SungSookThe best way to learn vocabulary is to combine it with situations where you use the words you've learned. This will help you remember them longer. Additionally, if you enjoy Korean movies or music, you can take advantage of this to learn and have fun at the same time. However, learning a foreign language isn't just about grammar and vocabulary; you also need to understand the cultural and social context of that country, especially in modern life. Through this, you can approach real-life situations such as the daily life of a family. I also suggest a Korean drama that can help you in this area: "The Strange Father.".

Learn vocabulary through extracurricular activities.

Ms. Otsubo WakabaTo learn vocabulary and grammar effectively, you must use and repeat what you have learned many times. And an important factor in learning a foreign language well in general is that you shouldn't be afraid to make mistakes or misunderstand things. Because through your mistakes, you will remember them longer.

There are four main factors: Grammar – Vocabulary – Cultural and social knowledge – Passion. Which is the most important factor for students learning a foreign language?

Ms. Otsubo WakabaBy understanding socio-cultural knowledge, students will know how to translate appropriately to suit the situation and the general characteristics of Japanese people.

Ms. Choi SungSookIn my opinion, the two most important factors are "passion and knowledge of socio-cultural aspects." Therefore, to study any profession, passion is the first key to achieving success.

CWhat talk show topics impressed you teachers in the past few months?

Teacher NghiemDRAMA SHOW! I was impressed by the professionalism and serious investment of the students. They poured their hearts and souls into it, utilizing their knowledge from school to create a highly successful talk show. Through this, they not only improved their language skills, such as pronunciation and fluency, but also honed their emotional expression and tone of voice, leading to better communication.

Mr. Tan (Lecturer in Japanese Translation for Economics and Commerce)Last March, the Japanese language department at Viet My College had the opportunity to exchange ideas with Mie University – one of the most renowned universities in Japan. Not stopping there, in July, all students from all courses personally planned and decorated the talk show "July: Stepping Through the Japanese Summer." This was also a project for the third translation course. Through these talk shows, students not only gained new knowledge but also learned more about Japanese culture and society.

Ms. Vy (lecturer in Korean language): She was impressed with the talk show "Employer Needs and Essential Skills for Korean Interpreters" for three reasons. Firstly, the guest speaker was a Korean language teacher and interpreter for a Korean football team. She previously worked as an interpreter for coach Park Hang Seo and has extensive experience working at large Korean corporations. Secondly, the speaker shared valuable insights with the students, including tips on how to meet the demands of today's employers. Finally, the talk show fostered active sharing and effective application of the skills learned in class. She is very proud of this!

The expectations that teachers have for students, based on practical lessons.

Ms. VyFirst, you need to master the specialized knowledge of economics and commerce. In addition, you must cultivate and effectively apply professional skills as well as soft skills. To develop all these skills, students need to have a good and serious attitude towards learning.

What are the teachers' plans for future activities?

Teacher TanA mock interview with a company will be held in the near future. This is an opportunity for students to experience a real interview with Korean, Japanese, or foreign-invested companies using English. Furthermore, an upcoming activity from the Japanese language department will be an exchange program with a Japanese university to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Vietnam.

To succeed in any field within the Foreign Languages sector, what soft skills do you consider most important for a translator/interpreter?

Teacher NghiemThe nature of an interpreter's job requires listening to a large volume of information. Memorizing information is crucial and essential for conveying messages accurately. Furthermore, cross-cultural intelligence is indispensable; understanding different social and cultural contexts enables students to develop diverse communication skills that can satisfy their interlocutors.

In an era where the job market is in great need of young talent, what do you think the job opportunities will be like for university students in the next five years?

Ms. Vy2022 marked the anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Vietnam. To commemorate this milestone, in June, a delegation led by the South Korean President and leaders of South Korean businesses visited Vietnam to discuss further investment in educational facilities in various provinces and cities. Therefore, you can now be confident about your job opportunities. Graduating with a major in Korean from Viet My College, you can work not only in commercial and administrative companies but also in the educational sector.

After graduating from Viet My College, can students work abroad?

Teacher TanWith the Japanese Translation and Interpretation program for Business and Economics, you can absolutely work at foreign companies. Throughout your studies, in addition to communication lessons based on everyday life situations, you will also be equipped with skills in CV writing, interview techniques, email writing, and more. Especially this year marks the strengthening of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan, a positive sign for students with wide-ranging career opportunities.
