On July 27th, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training announced the results of the 10th grade entrance exam for over 80,000 candidates. The results showed that the percentage of candidates scoring above average in all three subjects was higher than the previous year.

Specifically, in Literature, 94,241 candidates scored 5 points or higher (compared to 93,81 candidates the previous year). The corresponding scores for Mathematics were 51,371 (compared to 49,91 candidates the previous year) and for English were 50,731 (compared to 41,31 candidates the previous year).
There were more high-achieving students than last year.
In the 2019 Ho Chi Minh City entrance exam for 10th grade, 1,350 students achieved the highest entrance exam scores (total score of 3 subjects, with Literature and Mathematics weighted by a factor of 2) of 42 points or higher.
This year, with the same number of candidates, the scores are 43.25 or higher. Last year, the number of candidates scoring 40 points or higher was 3,387, while this year the same number of candidates scored 41 points or higher.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu – Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training – analyzed: “Many people think this year's exam was easier, and it is true that it was easier compared to the general knowledge requirements.”.
Nevertheless, since this is an entrance exam, the questions still included some challenging questions. The exam results show that the number of students achieving high scores this year is significantly higher than last year.
For example, in Literature last year, only 101 students scored 8 points or higher, while this year the number is 161. In Mathematics last year, 7,671 students scored 8 points or higher, while this year it is 13,81. In English last year, 9,71 students scored 8 points or higher, and this year the number is 141.
Mr. Hieu added: "Based on the above score sheet, plus the important factor that the enrollment quotas for top-tier and second-tier schools in the 2020-2021 school year have not changed much, 9th-grade teachers predict that the cut-off scores for top-tier schools will increase slightly from 0.75 to 1.5 points.".
For mid-tier schools (those that accept students with above-average academic performance), this year's exam scores have also increased compared to last year. Therefore, the cut-off scores will also increase by 0.5 to 1 point.”.
“"It's easier" for lower-ranked schools in suburban areas.
However, high scores were concentrated among students with above-average or excellent academic performance. Some students with only average grades even managed to achieve a 7.5 in math.
This was unexpected for both teachers and students. The reason is that the difficulty level of the questions designed to differentiate between high-achieving and excellent students had been reduced compared to the previous year.
Based on the scores of our students, our homeroom teachers predicted that top-tier high schools would definitely increase their admission scores to some extent.”.
Ms. M. also added: "But the difficulty level of the questions for average students has not decreased. Therefore, the score range for students with average or above-average academic ability has not increased.".
However, according to some principals of junior high schools in the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh City, the most noticeable characteristic of this year's enrollment season is that suburban and outlying districts have reduced their enrollment quotas more than inner-city districts; mid-tier and lower-tier schools have reduced their quotas more than top-tier schools.
Most notably, District 8 saw a decrease of 135 students each in both Luong Van Can and Ngo Gia Tu schools; District 9 had three schools, with Nguyen Van Tang and Duong Van Thi schools decreasing by 90 students, and Long Truong High School decreasing by 45 students. Thu Duc District had Dao Son Tay School decreasing by 90 students and Linh Trung School decreasing by 45 students.
In Binh Tan District, Binh Tan High School saw a decrease of 90 students, and Binh Hung Hoa High School decreased by 45 students… Therefore, although the cut-off scores for schools in suburban and outlying areas are considered "easier," they could still increase by 0.5 to 1 point depending on the school.
