Digital skills for young workers

With the rapid development of technology, artificial intelligence, and robotics, combining professional skills with soft skills is the best solution to help young workers succeed in the context of a skills revolution. This was shared by labor experts at the workshop "International Integration: Future Human Resources, Equipping Young Vietnamese Workers with Skills for Success," organized recently by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and Mainpower Group.

Soft skills are the best solution for young workers to succeed.

It is difficult to find skilled workers.

According to Simon Matthews, General Manager of ManpowerGroup Vietnam, Thailand, and the Middle East, a survey of nearly 40,000 employers in 43 countries revealed that 2018 was the year with the highest talent shortage in many years. Even countries with the highest employment rates faced difficulties. Notably, employers were unable to find workers with the skills they desired. The larger the company, the more difficult it was to recruit talent. 451 employers worldwide failed to recruit the right talent; 271 employers failed to recruit suitable candidates due to a lack of specialized or soft skills among applicants.

In Vietnam, Simon Matthews observes that the young Vietnamese workforce possesses many strengths such as being young, numerous, hardworking, eager to learn, adept at using technology in job searching, and creative. However, the young Vietnamese workforce also has weaknesses such as work ethic, foreign language skills, experience, and especially soft skills.

“This is a revolutionary era of skills; those lacking skills will face job losses and job insecurity. Currently, skilled workers in Vietnam account for only 111% of the workforce, with 401% still working in agriculture. If Vietnam wants to improve labor productivity and attract foreign investment, its workforce must be much more skilled than it is now. Helping people upgrade their skills in a rapidly changing world of work is essential to securing sustainable employment,” Simon Matthews stated.

Skills required in these industries

To seize the opportunities opening up for young workers, Dr. Dao Quang Vinh, Director of the Institute of Science - Labor and Social Affairs, believes that supplementing digital skills in the future is essential. Dr. Vinh shared: “The characteristics of future jobs are diverse and interdisciplinary, involving artificial intelligence and electronic machinery, international connectivity, and sustainable development… Therefore, the necessary skills in emerging industries include working with automated systems and robots, understanding algorithms for processing big data, mechatronics, IT, and communication skills…”.

In addition to the skills mentioned above, according to Mr. Vinh, the skills that Vietnamese students need to learn in school include: knowledge of technology creation (STEM), science, technology, engineering, mathematics, etc. Supplementary skills for technology such as higher-order cognitive thinking, socio-emotional skills, and skills in interacting with technology (digital skills) are essential for working in diverse environments, and soft skills such as teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking are also very necessary for workers.

“"In any case, the manufacturing sector will continue to play an important role for Vietnam in the coming time, because these sectors still provide many jobs for workers. Along with equipping workers with necessary skills, lifelong learning and continuous learning will help them have sustainable, stable, and long-term employment," Mr. Vinh said.

Sharing this view, Simon Matthews believes that skills are the new currency in the digital age, as technology will replace manual and cyclical jobs. “Soft skills + professional skills + digital skills is the perfect combination. These skills are human strengths, complementing technology and reducing the risk of workers being replaced by automation,” Simon Matthews emphasized.

Mr. Doan Mau Diep, Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, stated: “The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs will strengthen the capacity of the nationwide job placement center system; and at the same time, reinforce skills, especially new skills, for Vietnam's human resources.”.
