The restaurant and hotel management industry is on the rise.

At many universities and colleges in Ho Chi Minh City, the hotel and restaurant management major is the most popular choice among applicants. Why is this trend occurring?

HIGH RECRUITMENT NEEDS

According to data from the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Human Resources Forecasting and Labor Market Information, the demand for personnel in the tourism, restaurant, and hotel service sector doubled in April compared to March 2018. Sectors with high recruitment demand in April included: Sales staff, textiles and footwear, tourism, restaurant, and hotel services…

According to Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Deputy Director of the center, recently, students have been choosing many technology-engineering and hospitality-related fields. This trend in choosing fields of study is reasonable and in line with current social trends. The hospitality sector is in need of a large workforce, so recruitment needs have been and will continue to increase. Data from the real estate provider Savills shows that in Ho Chi Minh City, the supply of hotel rooms increased by 21% year-on-year, reaching over 16,500 rooms from 133 projects, with an average occupancy rate of 741% year-on-year. In 2018, Ho Chi Minh City aimed to welcome 7.5 million international tourists, an increase of 181% year-on-year. By 2020, 14 new projects will provide approximately 3,500 rooms. The latest report on the Da Nang real estate market by this corporation shows that the city welcomed 6.6 million tourists in 2017, an increase of 191% year-on-year. Of these, international tourists increased by 371%. In 2018, 2,300 hotel rooms in the 4- and 5-star segments entered the market. The total supply consists of 101 hotels in the 3- to 5-star segment with approximately 11,800 rooms.

According to the Hanoi Statistics Department, in the first two months of 2018, Hanoi welcomed approximately 1 million international visitors, an increase of 31% year-on-year. There are 44 future hotel projects. The total supply reached approximately 10,000 rooms, an increase of 11% quarter-on-quarter and 91% year-on-year.

Mr. Truong Tan Loi, Deputy Director of Events at Park Hyatt Hotel, believes that the industry's popularity remains high and will continue. The demand for human resources in the restaurant and hotel industry has increased recently due to large hotel and resort projects. Phu Quoc Many hotels and resorts owned by both foreign and Vietnamese corporations have sprung up. Meanwhile, there is a shortage of human resources to serve these establishments, with most of the workforce being recruited from Ho Chi Minh City. Salaries for positions in Phu Quoc are quite high, so many young graduates are willing to travel far to work there.
However, Mr. Tran Anh Tuan also noted that while this is a profession in demand by society, students must study well and have passion to succeed. Choosing to study simply because it's trendy without passion or suitability can easily lead to regrettable consequences.
