What to do when exam results are not as expected?

Students submit their applications before the entrance exams take place. However, after the exams, not everyone achieves the results they hoped for. In such a situation, how should students and parents respond?

Students in various provinces and cities have just completed their 10th-grade entrance exams. Many students said they did quite well and were confident of achieving high results, but many others were also worried and nervous about their performance. However, when asked about their contingency plans in case the results weren't as expected, many students said they had prepared both mentally and had a specific plan for the future.
Sharing her plans, Nguyen Ngoc Lan Anh, a 9th-grade student at Ly Tu Trong Secondary School (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City), said that she had previously registered Phu Nhuan High School as her first choice, Tran Hung Dao High School as her second choice, and Nguyen Trung Truc High School as her third choice. “Before the exam, I knew my academic abilities, so I prepared myself mentally for the possibility that the results wouldn’t be as expected. My parents didn’t put too much pressure on me,” Lan Anh shared. Although she did quite well on the exam, she wasn’t sure if she would get into her desired school. “I might register for a private school to continue my studies, even though I might be very sad,” she added.
Similarly, Phuong Anh, a 9th-grade student at An Nhon Secondary School (Go Vap District), also said that a few months before the exam, she had already discussed with her parents the possibility of not getting accepted into her registered choices. “I’ve also considered studying graphic design at a vocational school, or maybe continuing my education at a private school. Even with all that planned, if I really fail to get into any of my choices, I’ll probably be… very shocked,” Phuong Anh confided.
This year, Ho Chi Minh City has over 96,000 junior high school graduates, of which 82,300 registered to take the entrance exam for 10th grade. However, the total enrollment quota for public high schools is only 66,500, so it is expected that nearly 16,000 students will not be admitted.
College 9+ – a new option for middle school students
Previously, during the end-of-year school ceremony, Mr. Pham Ngoc Thanh, former Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training and Principal of Viet-Japan High School (Go Vap District), wrote a heartfelt letter sharing advice and guidance with his students. In it, he advised them to prepare mentally in case their exam results were not as expected. “If the exam results are not as expected, remember that this is just an exam. Going to university is only one path to fulfilling your dreams, and the ultimate goal is to cultivate yourself into a truly upright person, knowing right from wrong, good from evil; knowing how to love, understand, and share. And especially, you must have the willpower to develop your abilities and contribute to society. You may not become an outstanding talent to do great things, but I hope that you can contribute to life in small ways with a big heart of love,” Mr. Thanh wrote.
Psychologist Dr. To Nhi A stated: “To react appropriately to exam results, parents and students need to proactively plan ahead to have multiple contingency plans. Regardless of the exam results, we should remain calm and avoid creating pressure or blaming each other. Achieving success is a long journey; the most important thing is the entire future ahead, and we need to move forward with a positive attitude.”.
