Nguyen Ngoc Thuy Nhu – “To succeed, the first thing is to be confident in what you do.”

Mentioning Nguyen Ngoc Thuy Nhu, students from the 2016 Business English Translation program will surely remember the image of a pretty, likeable girl with expressive eyes. In particular, she was extremely passionate about studying English and very independent. Graduating in August 2019, Nhu is currently a teacher and consultant at Apax Leader English Center. Let's chat with this student from the 2016-2019 cohort, as reported by Viet My College.

Thùy Như became independent early on, especially after losing her father at a young age. Later, at her mother's request, the 2016 graduating class left home and moved to Ho Chi Minh City to live in a convent, where she cultivated self-reliance. That year, Thùy Như was just 13 years old. This strong young woman is Nguyễn Ngọc Thùy Như – a former student of the Business English Translation program, class of 2016-2019, who has now become a confident and capable foreign language teacher.

APC: Hi Nhu, could you introduce yourself a little?

  • Hello APC, my name is Nguyen Ngoc Thuy Nhu – a former student of the Business English Translation major, and I am currently working at Apax Leader English Center. My job is to teach students and advise customers who have questions about the center's teaching programs.

APC: What kind of difficulties does Nhu often encounter at work?

  • As I understand it, difficulties in any field are unavoidable, and only those in the industry truly understand those challenges. I'm no different; having only graduated a year ago, I lack experience. Sometimes I feel stressed and exhausted by the pressure, but looking back on the arduous journey I've taken gives me the motivation to keep trying. Besides ensuring students don't get poor grades, I also have to address parents' questions. Although the workload is heavy, I still manage to handle everything well. Because during my time as a student, I was equipped with essential skills such as time management and planning. Therefore, the more I work and the more difficulties I encounter, the more opportunities I have to develop myself.

APC: Are you passionate about English?

  • As for my passion, I'm passionate about many other languages besides English. While attending an international high school, I was exposed to English daily and even went abroad as an exchange student. Because of this extensive exposure, I have a solid foundation in English. Therefore, studying Business English Translation at Viet My College wasn't too difficult for me. However, translation work requires a lot of English knowledge. I've been honing my translation skills for 2 years and 8 months here and have achieved some success, with my English proficiency developing significantly. To achieve this, my teachers at Viet My guided me in using English as a tool during my internships and practical training. Through long-term hard work and dedication, I've finally gained the confidence and ability to communicate effectively with foreigners and become a professional English translator today.

APC: Could you share a little about what your time as a student was like?

  • I had a wonderful and unforgettable time at Viet My College. Here, I gained specialized knowledge in a 2-year and 8-month training program, along with social skills to prepare me for the job, instead of spending 4-5 years at university. While considering which school to choose after graduating from high school, I researched Viet My College and was impressed by the high percentage of practical training compared to theoretical learning. Therefore, I decided to choose Viet My College as the starting point for my future.
  • When I first entered Viet My College, I felt strange and hesitant to interact with many new friends. Thanks to actively participating in beneficial school activities such as Bonding Day, Leadership Boothcamp, and other events, I changed and became more confident. These activities brought everyone together, and from then on, I no longer felt strange or out of place among the new students. In my second year, thanks to my efforts and passion for English, I was elected as the leader of the English Club. From there, I learned more about management, presentation skills, problem-solving within a team, and other management skills that the teachers diligently guided me through. Furthermore, I gained many happy and sad memories as a student at Viet My College.

APC: Could you share some advice for high school and university students?

  • When I was a 12th-grade student, I was just like many of you now, confused and struggling to choose a major and a university. I'm passionate about English, but there are so many career paths related to that passion. After a long period of studying for the high school graduation exam and researching to understand myself better—what I like or want—I understand the thoughts of 12th-grade students today. Take your time to figure out what you truly want or enjoy doing. From there, choosing a university and a major will be much easier.
  • Working outside of school is much more challenging than studying, because while you're in school, you're pampered by everyone, teachers, and parents. The skills learned at school are very useful for future employment. Young people still have time to study and play, so they should try to enjoy themselves and gather as much knowledge and skills as possible. That knowledge and those skills will be invaluable assets for their future careers after graduation.
  • Many external businesses are looking for competent, diligent individuals with good social skills. Students who are about to start internships should now review their strengths and weaknesses and strive to improve. Young people should be bold in learning, dare to give themselves many opportunities to challenge themselves, and be confident in themselves.

Thank you, Thuy Nhu, for your interesting and heartfelt sharing about your journey in pursuing your passion and for the incredibly helpful advice you've given to current students. APC wishes you success and happiness on your chosen path!
