The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has announced the cutoff scores for admission to public high schools in the 2020-2021 academic year. Based on the target of over 66,000 places in public high schools, it is expected that nearly 20,000 students will not be admitted.
“"I think that attending a public school isn't the only path. Continuing your high school education at a vocational school or pursuing a trade is also a promising option for the future."”
Mr. NGUYEN VAN LAM (Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City)

There are many other options.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, if students do not pass the entrance exam to public high schools, they can choose to continue their studies at private schools or continuing education centers. Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, also stated that those who do not pass the public high school entrance exam still have many options at schools within the vocational education system.
“Ho Chi Minh City has over 100,000 students completing lower secondary school, but 82,000 of them are enrolling in grade 10. This means that over 20,000 students have already decided on their upper secondary education. After the exam, those approximately 20,000 students will choose to attend private schools, continuing education centers, and vocational training institutions. The total enrollment quota I have for these systems is over 35,000. This means that all students have the right to choose after lower secondary school, which is very convenient,” Mr. Hieu emphasized.
In addition, Mr. Hieu added: “Currently, the continuing education and high school programs are the same. Students can choose vocational schools to work and help their families, then continue their education later. Or they can choose local continuing education centers that are close to home and convenient for commuting. In general, they should prioritize choosing a school that suits their circumstances…”.
Diverse industries
According to statistics from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the city currently has 567 vocational education institutions, including: 52 colleges, 65 vocational secondary schools, 86 vocational training centers, and 364 other establishments engaged in vocational education activities.
In 2019, vocational education institutions provided the labor market with nearly 250,000 graduates at various levels. The quality of training in some fields such as nursing, pharmacy, and medical assistants was a key factor in recruitment. On average, nearly 801 graduates from intermediate-level programs found employment relevant to their training, while nearly 821 graduates from college-level programs found employment.
Mr. Nguyen Van Lam, Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City, assessed: "The enrollment of vocational education programs in 2019 exceeded the set targets. Nine service sectors continued to account for a high proportion of the total number of new students (over 751 TP3T), while the remaining were four key industrial sectors and freelance occupations, contributing to labor mobility.".
