Singapore tour – steps outside the comfort zone for Vietnamese-American students.

When people think of Singapore, they easily recall magnificent, bustling, and luxurious shopping centers like Orchard, Bugis, Somerset, and Marina Bay, with their towering skyscrapers and buildings that would overwhelm any shopping enthusiast. However, the teachers and students of Viet My College chose Singapore not because it's a land of shopping and dining, but because, as a tradition, once a year, Viet My students, along with their instructors, explore this island nation as a way to challenge themselves, break through their intellectual boundaries, and learn about the civilization and history of this neighboring country.

My first time traveling abroad, my first time flying, and my first time learning how to use the MRT.

While in Vietnam, at every conference and seminar, people talk about Industry 4.0, AI, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning, it was only when students arrived in Singapore that they truly understood how Industry 4.0 is impacting and changing daily life.

The students listened attentively to the Principal's instructions before boarding the plane.

Let's study the MRT map together after arriving at Changi Airport.

The past four days (April 5-8, 2018) in Singapore left many memorable impressions and valuable lessons for the teachers and students of Viet My College. For the vast majority of students, this was their first time experiencing life outside of Vietnam, learning skills to avoid breaking the law and becoming naive about life abroad. The feeling of flying and riding the MRT for the first time was special; it wasn't about luxury or vacations, but about breaking free from familiar routines. Stepping outside of Vietnam allowed them to see how people live modern lives. Going abroad taught them the necessary social skills and self-confidence to succeed and find happiness in their life choices.

My first time riding the MRT and standing in line neatly waiting to board the train.

Students have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and confidently communicate with native speakers at famous locations such as: visiting the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the Google office in Singapore. At these places, students have had the chance to interact and share experiences with local students, chat, and learn about working in one of the world's most modern offices. Immersing themselves in the vibrant, multicultural world of Little India, Chinatown, and Malay Heritage, students quickly make friends and chat with Thai and Singaporean peers at Merlion Park, Marina Bay, NUS, or the Botanic Garden….

Students visited and interacted with the National University of Singapore.

Upon arriving at their dream office at Google, many students set additional goals for themselves, aiming to gain experience and work at international companies after graduation.

A minitalk show program between Principal Duong Tran Minh Doan and a friend who currently works at Google's office.

According to Mr. Duong Tran Minh Doan – Principal of APC and the main leader of the delegation for the recent trip, he added:‘Visiting famous landmarks, scenic spots, or interacting and connecting with locals isn't necessarily the main purpose of the program. The primary goal is to teach students how to travel abroad, master social skills, and handle situations such as: booking airline tickets independently, identifying terminals and flight information, proactively using automated check-in systems at the airport, going through customs, ordering food, asking for directions, and behaving respectfully in hostels and public places. ‘

For many students, this was their first time in an international environment, flying on an airplane, etc., yet they were confident and proactive. This was all thanks to the dedicated guidance of their teachers.

The trip provided valuable lessons for the students, equipping them with basic skills and the ability to handle situations when traveling abroad, not only to Singapore but also to countries with stricter regulations such as the United States, Taiwan, Japan, France, etc. Most importantly, it ensured they wouldn't fall behind in a world constantly changing and allowed them to break the boundaries of knowledge.

Each of you is a unique story, depending on your individual perspective and personality.

The students confidently communicated with locals at Merlion Park.

Tran Chau Ngoc Anh excitedly shared her feelings: ‘"Besides the impressive culture, people, and architecture of Singapore, I also appreciated the dedication and thoughtfulness of Mr. Doan, Mr. Phuong, and the other members of the group. For example, their communication and conversation skills with locals, and their ability to handle situations abroad. Especially through the sharing sessions about what I learned, I discovered my strengths and weaknesses, allowing me to improve and develop myself further."’

The trip concluded, but it opened up new ideas about learning, development, and the continuous journey of engaging with global civilization for each student. Although only four days long, it left a lasting impression on everyone in the group. For the students, it was their first time flying abroad, filled with exciting memories. For the trainers, it brought joy and new lessons for their mentoring work. Most importantly, each student bravely stepped out of their comfort zone, quickly integrated, and developed a strong learning spirit. From there, they discovered themselves and focused on developing their existing strengths. More trips are planned for other students to participate in throughout 2018.
