What do I need to do to become a professional Japanese interpreter?

It's undeniable that Japanese is one of the most difficult foreign languages to learn today; however, for those passionate about the culture and language of the Land of the Rising Sun, everything becomes incredibly easy. To pursue your dream of becoming a professional Japanese interpreter, you need to meet the following basic requirements.

Qualifications:

Japanese interpreting is divided into two types: spoken interpreting (also known as interpreting) and written interpreting (translation). Therefore, a professional Japanese interpreter needs to have excellent Japanese writing skills, be able to grasp the main points of a complex text quickly, communicate naturally and fluently with native speakers, or be able to write a coherent text in Japanese independently.

Therefore, to meet these prerequisites, a Japanese translation graduate needs to have at least an N3 level or a B1 level from the JFS certification.

Good communication skills:

Translation work in general, and Japanese translation in particular, demands quite rigorous communication skills. Even with strong professional expertise, it's useless if you don't know how to present and explain things logically and coherently. Therefore, cultivate excellent communication skills, especially when facing a crowd, and learn how to present your ideas and personal opinions fluently and engagingly.

Gain a broad and diverse range of knowledge:

To become a Japanese interpreter, you not only need to be proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, but you also need to possess a diverse range of knowledge about Japanese culture, society, politics, history, customs, etc. This will help you easily apply your knowledge to necessary situations.

For example, in a conversation with a business partner, you can discuss customs, lifestyles, or express admiration for their talents, while avoiding topics that could be misunderstood or inappropriate.

How much do Japanese interpreters earn?

Determining the salary of a Japanese interpreter depends on many factors: the type of interpretation, working hours, work environment, specialization, and level of interpretation. You can refer to the salary range for a Japanese interpreter in 2019 below:

  • Level 1 (basic): $70 to $90 per day, approximately $50 per session.
  • Level 2 (Advanced): You will be paid a daily wage of $100-$150 and $80 per shift.
  • Level 3 (Advanced): Upon reaching this level, your salary for Japanese interpreting work will naturally exceed 220-350 USD per workday and 130 USD per session.
