To kick off the 2023 Job Fair, a major event of the Design Department – Viet My College, Mr. Nguyen Huynh – Lecturer in Graphic Design – invited Mr. Nguyen Huy Phuong and Mr. Le Huu Tan, Creative Director and Account Manager of Pulu Studio – a design company specializing in packaging design – to meet and interact with Viet My College students in a talk show about packaging titled “Creative Illustration on Packaging”.
Pulu Studio is a design company that originated from general brand design. However, during the course of its work, recognizing the interest and potential in packaging design in particular, the company completely shifted its focus to packaging design. Brands Pulu Studio has worked with include: Savoure, Kinh Do, Thuong Dinh Yen, ToCoToCo, The Coffee House, etc., with designs such as mooncake boxes, bird's nest drink boxes, ceramic mugs, gift sets, etc.
The talk show was attended by over 60 graphic design students, all of whom were curious about the knowledge they would gain. Most graphic design students enjoy drawing, using various tools and methods – some prefer black and white, others color, some digital, and some simply drawing on paper, etc. However, their common concern was how their drawing skills would benefit their future careers. Would their illustration abilities be applicable later on? Or would they simply use design software for work? All these questions were answered in the talk show with Pulu Studio.
The first part of the talk show, presented by Mr. Le Huu Tan, explained the role and importance of packaging. In this section, students learned about the characteristics of packaging design and how to persuade customers to choose illustrations for their packaging designs. Additionally, the speaker introduced some of the company's previous projects and explained the step-by-step process of packaging design for a business.
The second part of the Talkshow was a Q&A session, where students asked the two speakers questions about working with clients or developing ideas during the design process. In this section, Mr. Nguyen Huy Phuong, representing Pulu Studio, answered the students' questions. Besides addressing their concerns, Mr. Phuong (also known as Pulu) also offered tips to help students manage their future work more smoothly and create more effective illustrations.
Following the talk show, the students shared very positive feedback. Through the talk show, they all gained a better understanding of the packaging industry, the steps involved in designing packaging for a business, how to avoid creative block, and how to build credibility, etc. Finally, they also received helpful advice from the speakers, which will further motivate them on their future career paths.
