Over 40 stunning portfolios were showcased at the Design Department's 2023 Job Fair.
Besides a CV, a portfolio is an indispensable part of a designer's job application. A portfolio is a collection containing all of a designer's design projects, allowing recruiters to see what projects the designer has worked on and what their experience is. At the 2023 Job Fair of the Design Faculty, more than 40 portfolios were displayed in the school's LAB for businesses to review.
The gallery showcasing these dazzling portfolios was always bustling with people coming and going throughout the event.
After planning the exhibition of 20 outstanding student projects, to be held in the ground floor lobby of the school, the faculty members of the Design Department faced another challenge: how to present these more than 40 portfolios neatly, comprehensively, and without taking up too much space. Because portfolios are a form of display encompassing many different designs, choosing the purely printed format like the exhibition in the lobby would be very costly and require a lot of space to display all the publications. Therefore, after discussion, the faculty decided to display the students' portfolios on computer screens as a continuously playing video. With this method, the portfolio will not remain static like a still image but will move from one image to another, giving the viewer a comprehensive view. If the viewer wants to pause and look more closely at a particular project, they can click the mouse or press the Spacebar on the keyboard to pause the video. This is a convenient and highly versatile method.

Because a portfolio is the most comprehensive reflection of a designer's personality and style, the perception of viewing a portfolio will vary depending on each student's individual style. For example, some students' portfolios might be clean, elegant, and easy to read, while others with stronger personalities might have portfolios that are more graphic, dynamic, and express their individuality more strongly.
Each portfolio will have criteria that match the search criteria of different businesses, so students will all have the opportunity to work with businesses; if they are a good fit, they will be hired. However, besides the "fit" factor, your portfolio must have a certain quality, show investment, and be polished to make the company feel that the designer is professional and willing to collaborate. Because even if the portfolio is perfectly suited, if your presentation is not good, the company may still not hire you.
The students gathered in large numbers in front of the Portfolio Gallery entrance to see the companies' reaction.
Currently, there has been positive feedback from several businesses stating that they have found suitable designers for their companies, and some students have been selected for graduation internships. The Design Department hopes that future Job Fairs will further connect businesses with students, so that students can have one or more opportunities to apply their academic knowledge to real-world work.
