When registering your preferences: Don't focus solely on traditional exam subjects.

‘"You can study economics, social sciences, information technology… it doesn't matter. It's your attitude and aspirations that will determine your success," the Secretary of the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee shared with students at a career guidance and admissions counseling program on the morning of July 12th.

The program is jointly organized by Tuoi Tre newspaper, the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), the General Department of Vocational Education (Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs), and universities and the Department of Education and Training of Dong Thap province, with the support of Vingroup Corporation.

Speaking to students from his province, Mr. Le Minh Hoan – Secretary of the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee – recounted the story of Akio Morita (1921-1999), a student who served in the Japanese army during World War II. At that time, he was one of the first to hear the Japanese Emperor's declaration of surrender.

In the first half of his address, the Emperor apologized to the people of the world for the war. In the second half, he emphasized the spirit of Japan, the unity that would enable them to rise together and rebuild after the war.

Indeed, they rebuilt the country, transforming it into a prosperous nation from the ashes of two atomic bombs. “I will be a part of the country,” said Morita, the former student who later became the founder of the now-famous Sony brand.

“"You can study economics, social sciences, information technology… it doesn't matter. Your attitude and aspirations will determine your success. Going to university doesn't guarantee success.".

"Failure in the short term is not failure in life. Conversely, success in the short term does not guarantee success in the long run if that person lacks the aspiration to develop themselves and contribute to their homeland," Mr. Hoan said.

Mr. Le Minh Hoan spoke at the program on the morning of July 12th.

He added that in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, everything changes rapidly, with new and advanced technologies constantly updating and replacing the old ones.

Therefore, a lifelong learning mindset determines the outcomes of young people. Knowledge and skills only account for 201% of success, while attitude accounts for 801% of success. This includes a positive attitude, self-learning, and self-improvement.

“"Like streams flowing from the mountains into the ocean, there are main streams and tributaries. Therefore, there isn't just one path to success," Mr. Hoan said, reminding students that besides university, they can also pursue education at vocational training institutions.

Concluding his speech, Mr. Hoan recounted a story about an eagle egg that unfortunately fell into a chicken coop. The baby eagle was raised by the chickens. Seeing the bird flying in the sky, the mother hen reminded it: "We are just chickens; we will never be able to spread our wings." From then on, the baby eagle never dreamed of flying high in the air.

Mr. Hoan affirmed that the students sitting here could be the "eagles" of the future, but they must seek out and develop their full potential, with ambition and self-belief.

According to Dr. Le Thi Thanh Mai, Head of the Admissions Committee at the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, data from the Ministry of Education and Training shows that there were 228 admission combinations in 2020. Of these, traditional combinations such as mathematics-physics-chemistry, mathematics-literature-English, literature-history-geography, etc., only accounted for 10.

The number of new subject combinations reached 146, and the number of aptitude-based combinations reached 72. Notably, the combination with a natural science exam had 20, the social science exam had 26, and the combination with civics education had 25. These special combinations accounted for 71, representing 311 TP3T. The remaining combinations consisted of individual exams.

Dr. Mai shared that students, especially those in 11th grade, should not be confined to traditional exam subjects, but instead focus on deepening their knowledge and taking time to reflect on their own aspirations.

Even 12th-grade students, in addition to studying for exams, still need to reflect on their choices, as there is still another round of college application adjustments ahead.

According to Dr. Mai, students should start by asking themselves what they want to do, then choose a profession, followed by selecting a field of study, level of education, and school. Once they have chosen a school, students should reflect on whether it aligns with their initial aspirations.

“"When you get a high exam score, don't celebrate too soon; you need to compare it with the rest of the country. If everyone scores the same, you need to be cautious," Ms. Mai reminded.
