Writer Nguyen Ngoc Thach shares his story about choosing a school and a career.

During the high school and university entrance exam season, everywhere you go you hear stories about choosing schools, careers, and majors, along with a whole host of prejudices. It makes me feel sorry for those young people, and I wonder if anyone ever felt the same way about me back then.

chọn ngành chọn nghề

I study for myself, for my own sake, not to fulfill my parents' dreams.

Of course, if your child becomes an engineer or doctor because they like it, they're happy, and you're proud, then there's nothing more to say. But if your child doesn't like it, or isn't capable of it, then they can become an office worker, open a restaurant, study drawing, or pursue creative arts. In that case, you should support and encourage them to study what they enjoy. We often think that if everyone became an engineer or doctor, who would pursue other professions? Life is inherently diverse, so we must respect our children's decisions and passions.

When you're in university, you just focus on studying; there's no need to go to work.

choose the way of life
Would you like to play all day and still make money?

Yes, focusing on studying is certainly good, but once you enter the real world, you'll realize that life requires experience and the ability to handle situations and interact effectively. These things can only be learned through work; theoretical knowledge alone is insufficient. Therefore, it's crucial to guide children in balancing study and work from the beginning to gain more knowledge and experience in real life and interacting with people. These fundamental skills are infinitely more complex than the theories taught in school. So, even if you have the money and resources to avoid hardship, it's still a good idea to let your children work part-time.

University is the best, college is worthless.

This mindset is very disappointing and needs to be immediately removed from parents' minds. University is a school, college is a school; what matters is what you learn and your attitude towards learning. Don't think of learning as just going to class, sitting down, and then leaving. Learning is about your attitude towards the world and life; school is just a tool, a place to acquire knowledge. So, university is good, college is good; don't put pressure on students to go to university to bring honor to the family.

In reality, if your child goes to college and studies diligently and properly, their chances of success in life are much higher than those who go to university and are mediocre and irresponsible.

Moreover, most schools now focus on theoretical learning while neglecting practical application. It's like, even if you don't study anything all year, on exam day, if you're lucky enough to get help from a smart student, you'll get a high score and pass the course easily, graduating with honors and even having the opportunity to pursue a PhD. Therefore, evaluating students through application and experimentation is what's truly important.

Many colleges now offer excellent training, including the Viet My College, which provides bilingual training with a dual BTEC degree from the UK, evaluating students based on practical application results. The college offers training in over 10 fields, from English and Japanese languages to hotel management, tourism, public relations, marketing, and talent-based fields like fashion design and interior design… More details can be found here., www.caodangvietmy.edu.vn

So, stay calm, encourage and support your children as they take the exams, choose a school that matches their abilities and interests, and don't turn your dreams into a burden weighing down on your children's shoulders. It would be a disservice to their future…
