Game illustration is a branch of the Illustration Design course within the Graphic Design major. In this course, students will experience and learn how to create and apply illustrations to fields such as book illustration or game illustration.
During the 2023 academic year, the Illustration Design classes produced outstanding projects, each bearing the unique mark of the students and conveying a sense of quality. These commendable projects belong to Tang Quoc Vinh, Nguyen Hoang Thanh Phong, and Vo Nguyen Duy Quan.
Tang Quoc Vinh's game illustration is for the game project LOST, a survival horror game with a first-person perspective. The main character is depicted inside a suit that looks like a protective lab coat. Because the character always sees through a protective glass, the entire field of vision in the game is blurry and indistinct. Vinh meticulously crafted the illustration, even bending the walls and doors to mimic the fisheye effect the character sees. He clearly and detailedly portrays the game's mood and atmosphere.
Nguyen Hoang Thanh Phong's game illustration is for the Baby Sweet game project. It's a mini-game similar to Candy Crush. The candy shapes are simple, and the interface uses materials similar to candy, with a sweet pink color scheme and strong reflective gloss. The candy shapes are also based on basic geometric shapes like circles, squares, triangles, etc. Additionally, there are special "candies" that act as tools to help players achieve higher scores.
Vo Nguyen Duy Quan's game illustration is for the game Lebeata: Jubiter Blazing, an action platform game set in a post-apocalyptic world. The main character is depicted as a bio-mechanical robot with characteristics resembling a soulless puppet. The artwork is quite complete, with all the details—from the main character and antagonist to the scenery and icons—drawn by him. Furthermore, his illustration style helps viewers visualize the story he wants to convey.
The aforementioned projects are all high-quality products that, if further developed, could absolutely become outstanding indie games, contributing to the further development of the game design profession in Vietnam.
