According to market research firm BMI, the Vietnamese pharmaceutical market reached US$5.2 billion in 2017, an increase of approximately 10% compared to 2016, and is projected to grow to US$7.7 billion by 2021. A number of major players in the FMCG and retail sectors, such as Vinamilk, DigiWorld, Mobile World, and VinGroup, have begun entering the pharmaceutical industry. Along with this, the increasingly modern lifestyle has led to a growing demand for healthcare and pharmaceutical products.
Currently in Vietnam, there is a huge demand for pharmacists, nurses, technicians, and other healthcare professionals. Therefore, the pharmaceutical industry is considered attractive and offers many job opportunities. For the 2019-2022 academic year, Viet My College officially launched its Pharmacy program with a focus on practical, hands-on training, equipping students with foreign language skills and social skills, and building a high-quality workforce in the pharmaceutical industry, ready to integrate into the current globalized world.
Job opportunities are abundant for Pharmacy students.
In the Ministry of Health's strategy for the development of the pharmaceutical industry up to 2020 and with a vision to 2030, the domestic pharmaceutical industry has set many goals such as ensuring the timely supply of medicines for disease prevention and treatment; ensuring that drug businesses within the distribution system meet good practice standards; and strengthening human resource training, especially in clinical pharmacy.
In the near future, the pharmaceutical industry will need approximately 25,000 pharmacists with a college degree or higher. Currently, not only hospitals and pharmaceutical companies are facing a shortage of personnel, but even foreign pharmaceutical companies with branches in Vietnam, and drug manufacturing facilities, are also recruiting a large number of staff. The pharmaceutical workforce must be spread to local areas and lower-level medical facilities to ensure adequate healthcare for the population. In particular, the country's drug distribution system is expanding in scale and quantity, moving towards achieving standards, which also presents a good opportunity for pharmacy students.
In addition, the starting salary for a pharmacist with a college degree or higher consistently ranges from 8 to 10 million VND. Compared to salaries in the Vietnamese labor market, the pharmaceutical industry remains one of the top-paying and most stable jobs.

Challenges for Pharmacy Students in the Integration Trend
However, with the current training in most schools, many graduates are unable to meet job requirements. The needs and models of the pharmaceutical industry have changed significantly compared to the past. Graduates in pharmacy no longer simply have the opportunity to work in hospitals, pharmacies, or state-run pharmaceutical facilities, but can also pursue careers in business, marketing, and more. Therefore, in addition to professional knowledge, pharmacy students must also possess soft skills, especially foreign languages and community involvement.
Mr. PanKaij (Chief Representative of CIPLA – a well-known pharmaceutical company in India with a branch in Vietnam) also assessed that the pharmaceutical industry in Vietnam is currently quite developed, therefore the demand for human resources is high and diverse. CIPLA's branch in Vietnam regularly recruits Vietnamese employees, including many recent university graduates in pharmacy.“When recruiting, we are interested in the candidate's training program, experience, especially work skills, communication skills, and work management abilities. A mandatory requirement is that candidates must have good English skills.”Mr. PhanKaij said. The representative also stated that Vietnamese students have the advantage of being diligent, good listeners, and willing to learn. However, their soft skills and English language proficiency need improvement to better meet job requirements.“In India, pharmacy students often participate in internships or extracurricular courses and programs to familiarize themselves with the work before graduation. I don't know if similar activities exist in Vietnam, but I hope that students will always be given opportunities to learn and practice simultaneously, so that they can start working immediately after graduation.”.
