Many students are interested in working in the tourism, restaurant, and hotel industries. Experts believe this is a priority field of study with high demand for personnel.
According to statistics, this sector needs approximately 40,000 new workers each year in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and other localities.
70% practical, 30% theory
Graduates with a degree in tourism can become tour guides, managers, tour operators, receptionists, room service staff, chefs, and bartenders in restaurants and hotels. In addition, many other jobs are available, such as customer service, tour program design, conference organization, and teaching at tourism schools and training institutions.

For vocational schools, the training program consists of 70% (301 hours of practical training) and 30% (301 hours of theory training). A distinctive feature in the recruitment process for the tourism industry is the strong emphasis on evaluating practical experience.
According to information from the Hanoi College of Technology and Commerce, the current average income for those working in the tourism industry is 6-10 million VND. The average income for tour guides for foreigners in Vietnam is 10-30 million VND.
Hotel management is one of the high-paying professions. The average income for a manager in a mid-range hotel is around 10-18 million VND/month, while managers in 3-5 star hotels can earn even more. 2,000 USD or more.
In 2019, Vietnam's tourism industry aimed to welcome 103 million visitors, including 18 million international tourists and 85 million domestic tourists. This means that human resources in the tourism sector will receive special attention.
To pursue this field of study, students have many options, from vocational schools to colleges across the country, including Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Da Nang, Hue, etc. A single institution can offer various training programs such as vocational secondary schools, regular vocational colleges, vocational secondary schools, college transfer programs, college programs with part-time work, vocational secondary schools with part-time work, and basic vocational training.
Starting salaries start at a minimum of 4-5 million VND per month. Many students earn income while still studying. After graduation, many work in 4-5 star hotels, travel companies, or open their own restaurants. Students with excellent skills and foreign language proficiency earn higher salaries.
For vocational schools, the training program consists of 70% (301 hours of practical training) and 30% (301 hours of theory training). A distinctive feature in the recruitment process for the tourism industry is the strong emphasis on evaluating practical experience.

85% vocational students find employment.
Speaking about the interest of the tourism, restaurant, and hotel industries, Mr. Do Van Giang – Deputy Head of the Department of Formal Training – General Department of Vocational Education, The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs affirms that this is a particularly priority area. In vocational schools, this sector has an advantage with a practical training model, with 70% dedicated to practical training and only 30% to theory.
Currently, within the vocational education system, the tourism, restaurant, and hotel management training sector is piloting a program based on Australian standards, with the first cohort expected to receive diplomas by the end of the year. In addition, German training programs are also attracting attention. Students can pursue high-quality college-level programs, offering numerous job opportunities both domestically and internationally.
Professor Dinh Van Son – Rector of the University of Commerce – stated that the tourism and hospitality industry is indeed very "hot". The demand for human resources is wide open, and the government is also implementing special policies for training in this sector.
Therefore, some universities consider the enrollment quota for this major as a specialized field. Training under this specialized mechanism will apply a separate quota calculation method. Visiting lecturers from businesses are also counted towards the enrollment quota, meeting the very broad demand for human resources.
It is understood that the Ministry of Education and Training has issued a separate directive instructing schools training in tourism to collaborate with tourism associations and tourism businesses to provide on-the-job training within these businesses.

Regarding the training linkage between schools and businesses, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs stated that most vocational schools currently sign agreements with businesses and secure job placements for graduates. The 2018 graduation results showed that 851% of vocational school graduates found employment, an increase of 51% compared to 2017. Income in many professions is also very good.
Notably, many "in-company vocational school" models have emerged to train and meet the timely demands of the market. These advantages have led to a change in students' perceptions of vocational training in recent years.
